OUR STORY & HISTORY
Over 75 Years of Local Angling Tradition
THE HISTORY OF HAWK LAKE
A Man-Made Lake with a Storied Past
Wem Angling Club was formed in the wake of the Second World War by a small group of passionate local anglers. In 1949, Den German, Jack Brown, Tom Porter, Jim Edge, and Arthur Bailey came together in the Horse & Jockey pub (later known as The Pack) to create what would become a lasting part of the Wem community.

Today, we remain a proud, independent fishing club offering members-only access to the historic Hawk Lake and purpose-built pools at Tilley. We’ve grown in size, evolved with the times, and stayed true to our roots.

OUR LEGACY
The Growth of Wem Angling Club
In 1964, Wem Angling Club purchased Hawk Lake from Mr. Wade, then owner of Hawkstone Park Hotel. A loan from Barclays Bank funded part of the purchase, with Mr. Wade personally financing the rest. In the 1970s, the club bought out GKN Sankeys' shared interest, reclaiming full ownership and cementing Hawk Lake as the club’s permanent home.

A major challenge struck in 1968 when the lake bank failed and Hawk Lake emptied overnight. Club members and local families came together to salvage fish and rebuild the banks – laying clay bags and using machinery donated by member Albert Minshall to create what is now known as the causeway.

Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, the club made major improvements:
-
Canadian pondweed was eradicated
-
Roach, rudd, bream and carp were introduced
-
A track was laid along the lake
-
Match fishing trophies and social events flourished

In 2005, the club opened the Tilley Pools – a set of accessible, purpose-built ponds ideal for junior anglers, older members, and anyone looking for relaxed, easy-access fishing.

The club has proudly awarded dozens of trophies over the years, including the J.S. Edge Shield, Talbot Trophy, A.J. Minshall Cup and many more. Presentation nights were once a highlight of the calendar, drawing members together to celebrate the year’s achievements.

While the fishing landscape has changed, our commitment to community, conservation and good angling practice remains unchanged.
STILL BASED IN WEM
Still Going Strong – Over 75 Years Later
Wem Angling Club isn’t just about catching fish – it’s about pride in place, respect for tradition, and creating a space where generations of anglers can connect, learn and enjoy the sport.

With Hawk Lake and the Tilley Pools at the heart of our club, we welcome all ages and abilities to share in a legacy that continues to grow.
